The Prodigal: “Things Will Never Be the Way They Were”… But Was It All a Lie?

By

“Things will never be the way they were.”

Maybe your prodigal child said those words.

Or maybe their silence, their distance, and their choices said it for them.

And now you’re left holding memories of a child who once reached for your hand, ran to you for comfort, shared their little secrets, and made you feel like you were their safe place.

You remember the closeness.

You remember the laughter.

You remember when they needed you, trusted you, and wanted you near.

So how did you get here?

How did the child who once wanted you in every part of their world become the person who now seems perfectly content to live at a distance?

And the question that quietly breaks your heart…

Was it all a lie?

Were those moments real?

Did the bond you treasured mean as much to them as it did to you?

Or has the distance become so great that you’re beginning to question everything you thought you knew about your own child?

But wait…

What if the distance isn’t proof that the love never existed?

What if their present choices don’t erase the history you shared?

This doesn’t mean ignoring the hurt, excusing harmful behavior, or pretending that nothing has changed. And it doesn’t mean you can predict when or whether your child will return.

It means recognizing that a painful chapter does not automatically rewrite every chapter that came before it.

Your child may be distant.

Your relationship may be broken.

The closeness you once knew may feel like a lifetime ago.

And perhaps things really will never be exactly the way they were.

But does that mean there can never be something meaningful again?

Does a changed relationship mean the love was never real?

Sometimes, the hardest part of the prodigal journey isn’t just missing your child. It’s grieving the relationship you once had while wondering whether you’ll ever find your way to each other again.

And that’s what makes the prodigal journey so painful.

You’re left trying to reconcile the child you once knew with the child standing at a distance today.

You wonder if they remember what you remember. If the moments that meant so much to you still live somewhere in their heart.

“Things will never be the way they were.”

Maybe they’re right.

Maybe the relationship cannot return to exactly what it was before.

But how can you erase a history that helped shape who you both became?

How can today’s distance make yesterday’s memories any less real?

Maybe the past wasn’t a lie.

Maybe the part of the story you can see isn’t the whole story. ❤️
